The ballot measure that would repeal Alaska’s open primary and ranked choice voting system is now failing by the narrowest of margins, according to the latest results update from the Alaska Division of Elections on Nov. 18. Out of 314,056 ballots counted so far, “No” on Ballot Measure 2 now leads by 192 votes, 50.03% to 49.97%.

Nick Begich III now has 49% of first-place votes to U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola’s 46%, while Ballot Measure 2 is passing by a margin of 1 percentage point.

The gap also continues to narrow — but not nearly as much — in the race for Alaska’s lone U.S. House seat. Republican challenger Nick Begich III has 48.72% and Democratic incumbent Rep. Mary Peltola 46.1% — a gap of 2.6% and more than 8,300 votes.

A day after the votes for keeping Alaska’s open primary and ranked choice voting system overtook those to repeal it, the vote count tightened on Tuesday. The votes against the ballot measure to repeal the system are only 45 votes ahead of those in favor of repeal,
